3 Best Budget Sushi Places in Asakusa

The two ways to eat sushi affordably in Japan is conveyor style and standing bar style.

I like standing one because the chef(itamae-san) makes fresh sushi in front of you after you order, while conveyor sushi is less fresh as already-made sushi is turning around on the conveyor.

The origin of standing style restaurants in Japan dates back to Edo era, which is a few hundred years ago. The Edo people were impatient so that sushi was one of the fast-food that quickly make you satisfied.

Just order whatever you want one by one like à la carte at a standing sushi bar, while you pick up a dish of sushi at a conveyor sushi place. If a restaurant is offering a set meal, you can just order it as you do at the other restaurant.

There are many sushi places in Asakusa, especially at Sushi-ya Dori street. Here are the best budget restaurants, two of them are standing style and the other is where you are seated.

Hinato Maru Kaminarimon Yanagi Kouji (ひなと丸 雷門柳小路店)

Standing Sushi Bar near Sensoji Temple and Kaminarimon Gate

Hinato Maru is a standing sushi bar run directly by a fish brokerage firm with fresh seafood at affordable prices.
The restaurant is located by Nakamise Street(仲見世通り), the main street that leads from Kaminarimon gate(雷門)to Sensoji temple(浅草寺),  just 3 minutes away from Asakusa metro station.
The establishment feels new and clean, the atmosphere is friendly so that you can come alone or with friends, partner.

The Restaurant's Signature, Tuna Sushi

Carefully selected tuna, which is the most popular sushi of all time, is served as a good value platter. Many Japanese like fatty tuna as an exclusive piece but for foreigners, it might be interesting to try which one you like whether fatty or less fatty.
Fresh mackerel is nicely fatty that melts in your mouth with a bit of sweetness, while roasted conger is savoury with a soft and fluffy texture.

Below are some of the menu that I recommend.
Platters start from 600 yen.
3 kinds of tuna (3 pcs: fatty tuna, medium fatty tuna, tuna) / 600 yen
 3 kinds of shellfish (3 pcs: chef's choice) / 600 yen

A la carte starts from 70 yen per pcs!
70 yen / Egg, Tuna Rib, Sardine, Octopus
100 yen / Tuna, Horse Mackerel, Vinegared Mackerel,
 140 yen / Salmon, Snapper
190 yen / Fresh Mackerel, Scallop, Sweet Shrimp, Salmon Roe, Flounder, Conger
 390 yen / Sea Urchin

Appetizer and Drinks

There are appetizers like stew or grill. Most of the alcoholic drinks are from 350 yen, which is also reasonable.

Maguro Bito Kaminarimon Shuccyou Jo (まぐろ人 雷門出張所)

Another Standing Sushi Bar Located Between Asakusa Station and Kaminarimon Gate

Magurobito is just in front of the entrance No.2 of Asakusa station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line.

The restaurant is large enough for about 8 people and always crowded so that you might have to wait in line to enter, but no worry, the rotation goes fast as people stay short and go quickly rather than relaxed. I think the atmosphere is easy for ladies to enter even if you are dining alone.

There is another branch at Okachimachi(まぐろ人  御徒町出張所), which is also a small premise but close to the Ueno area.

Fresh Seafood with Reasonable Price starting from 80 Yen

Their prices are raging 80, 140, 170, 200, 230, 260, 290 and higher per a piece.

You enter the restaurant and as soon as you take a seat, the chef(itamae-san) asks you for a drink. Then it is the turn for you to order your favourite sushi.

If you are not sure what to eat, then just go for their recommendations that are written on the menu board. Those recommendations are usually the freshest ones that the head chef chose in the morning.

Torigoe Zushi (鳥越ずし)

Enjoy in The Older Vibes

This is more like the traditional atmosphere of a sushi restaurant than the sushi chains mentioned above. If you are looking for a place where you can sit down and enjoy the meal that the local goes for, this would be ideal.

This hidden gem is located in the quieter path that is still a few minutes away from the Kaminarimon gate.

Satisfying Portions with Affordable Price

The lunch menu is a choice of Nigiri(so-called sushi) or Chirashi(a bowl of vinegared rice topped with slices of seafood) at a price of 1200 yen.

Nigiri comes with 12 sushi including tuna, salmon roe, squid, shrimp etc. and tuna rolls, egg omelette.

Chirashi is topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp, crab, scallop.

Both provide miso soup, salad and kobachi(small side dish) so that it is for sure satisfying your appetite.
