Convenience stores, which is called as Konbini here in Japan, maybe the place you and all Japanese most often drop by other than your home and school, workplace.
Each chain has its characteristics so it would be fun to find what fits your lifestyle.
Here are the top 3 convenience stores.

The largest chain, Seven-Eleven, is committed to offering "absolute deliciousness".
With their private brand Seven Premium, you will get a large variety of distinctively high quality and safe food.  When you stop by the store, what you want to try is Kin no Shokupan(金の食パン - Golden Bread) of Seven Premium Gold, the higher quality and more expensive line, and Seven Cafe, rich coffee that you can grab quickly and affordably.
The electronic money card that they offer is the nanaco card.

Family Mart(ファミリーマート、ファミマ)

For someone living alone, what is great about this chain is their deli food that is packed in a small portion so that you can go to get a dish when you feel you want a little more for your dinner.  Fami chiki(ファミチキ: deep-fried chicken)is famous.
Their electronic money T-point card is one of the most useful prepaid cards in Japan.

Lawson(ローソン)

They are well known for their authentic sweets line. BASCHEE cheese cake(バスチー)was sold 1 million pieces within 3 days after its launch. Karaage-Kun is a long-selling deep-fried chicken that is very juicy and easy to eat as each piece is small so you can eat with a toothpick handily as your snacks.

To Sum Up

For me, I feel 7-Eleven is my most favourite Konbini in Japan as it is a nice palce to grab a coffee before going to work.  Another reason is that you can have the full features of a nanaco card, a prepaid card that can be used at both 7-Eleven and a supermarket Ito Yokado to collect points.

Please share this if it is helpful to find your favourite Konbini.
